How to refill the HP 40 black ink cartridge

Learn how to refill your HP 40 black ink cartridge in five simple steps by reading this post we’ve created for you.

The HP 40 black ink cartridge is one of the few high capacity cartridges, and it yields up to 500 top quality pages. This particular cartridge owes its printing quality to the pigmented ink it’s filled with.

This type of ink provides better printing quality on the sheets, since its components include many different dyes. You can read more information about pigmented inks in the following post.

As we were saying, this ink cartridge was created in the HP golden ages, and can’t be damaged as easily as other cartridge, Also, it lacks the inner sponge other cartridges have installed in them, and instead it has a small bag that contains all the ink.

This is particularly helpful if you want to refill your cartridge. Additionally, it’s very hard to damage the print heads on them. We recommend you refill this ink cartridge before it runs out of ink to avoid having any problems with the electronic circuit in it.

The HP 40 black ink cartridge is compatible with the following printer models: HP deskjet 1200; HP designjet 230, 250, 330, 350, 430, 450, 455, 488 and 650; and HP Copyjet and Copyjet M. The printing cost per page is very low, and you can just imagine how much more you could lower it by refilling this ink cartridge.

Even when this cartridge works with pigmented inks, you can also refill it with dyed inks. However, the pigmented one will resist discoloration and water exposure better than the dyed ones; it will also be more dense and have higher quality.

Refill procedure for the HP 40 black ink cartridge:

Before starting, please put your ink cartridge on a piece of black cloth, and preferably on top of a flat surface you can clean easily, just to avoid making a mess.

Step #1:
First of all, place the HP 40 black ink cartridge with the print head facing upwards. Take a look at the following picture for guidance. If you wish to learn more about ink cartridges and print heads in general, please visit the following post.

On the bottom of the ink cartridge, you’ll find a piece of black plastic that keeps you from seeing a small iron ball located on the lower side of the cartridge. This is where you’ll refill the cartridge. Now take a look at the next picture.

We recommend you remove this lid very carefully to avoid pushing the iron ball inside the cartridge. This can make things very difficult for you if you don’t have a plug to replace the iron ball with.

Step #2:
Please pay attention to this particular step. There are two different ways of injecting the ink to the cartridge. The first one is to push this iron ball back inside the cartridge. If you choose this method, you will need a plug sold only at ink cartridge refill stores.

The alternative way is to inject the ink right next to the iron ball. Please do not add too much pressure when doing this, just to keep the ball and the silicone that surrounds it safe from harm. This is the method we recommend the most, since these plugs aren’t very easy to find.

Step #3:
Regardless of the technique you selected, we always recommend you inject the ink as slowly as possible to avoid damaging the ink cartridge. Remember to inject only 10ml of ink to the cartridge, and do not push the needle all the way through the cartridge to avoid puncturing it.

Step #4:
After you’ve added the 10ml of ink to the cartridge, you may remove the syringe from it. Then, you will need to insert it again completely empty. Once it’s inside, take out 10ml of air from the inside of the cartridge, just to fill with ink the space you created by adding 10ml of air earlier.

Step #5:
If you’ve refilled this cartridge by pushing the iron ball inside it, you will need to look for a way of sealing the cartridge. We recommend you use a plug or a screw to get this done, but we’d prefer it if you’d use the exact same plug we mentioned at the beginning of this post.

If, on the other hand, you chose to inject the ink using the space right next to the iron ball, then just make sure there isn’t any ink leaking from the cartridge. Let it rest for about two hours with the print head facing downwards. If it releases more ink than usual in this position, we recommend you take out a bit more ink to it. If it’s not releasing enough, then add some more air. This will solve any of the two issues.

Recommendations:
We recommend you print several test sheets after you’re done with this process. If you wish to learn how to do this, please read the following post.
